TikTok's and Tweets (err...X's?) have turned the word "trauma" into a casual cliche these days. As a result, I find a that while a lot of men recognize trauma in others, they don't really consider the word as it applies to themselves. Put simply, trauma refers to emotional pain that goes unprocessed, or rather - results in adaptations that are self-destructive. This isn't something people tend to notice until the consequences become as loud than the pain their avoiding.
Just imagine a man who grows up in an angry household and as a result- becomes a quiet child who doesn't express his feelings much. His avoidant adaptations might be helpful to him growing up, then at college, work even. Maybe it causes some problems here and there but it's nothing he can't out-maneuver. Until one day his child tells him his emotional distance has left them feeling unloved, and years of disassociating from his emotions have left the man without the skills to heal the situation.
