FAQ

Where are we located?

Do we take insurance?

We are out-of-network providers and so clients are personally responsible for all fees upfront. With that said - many people can get reimbursed for visiting out-of-network providers through submission of a document called a superbill. Feel free to use the calculator below to see how much you may get reimbursed by your insurance for your therapy sessions with us:

Do we offer sliding-scale “discounts” for those who cannot afford our services?

Yes. We have a limited number of reduced-fee slots. If you are on a very limited income, you may submit a request for a reduced-fee. To do so, you will need to schedule a free consultation and Francis can discuss this with you directly.

Do we offer faith based therapy?

Our therapists are practicing Christians and can support you in your journey if you wish to integrate Christian rhetoric, spiritual practices or scripture into the framework of your treatment. For believers of any kind, rest assured  that you will have your faith treated with respect and dignity (something that is too often not the case with some therapists). With that said - it is important to understand that therapy is not a religious service, which is to say - we will not attempt to replace your pastor, priest or spiritual guides. The fundamentals of treatment are the same for anyone, regardless of belief.

Note: In Northern California, it is important to acknowledge that many Christians and non-Christians fear judgement from one another. No one shall be judged for their metaphysical beliefs here at The NorCal Center for Men. We are well versed in many religious and philosophical traditions and enthusiastically provide understanding for believers as well as non-believers (and everyone in between).

Do we see women?

Yes. We focus on outreach to men and research into issues affecting men, but human experiences are human experiences. People of any gender identification are welcome here.

What is psychotherapy? Is that different from other kinds of therapy?

Psychotherapy, talk-therapy, therapy….these terms are essentially synonyms. They all refer to the healing process of speaking to a professional therapist about your life experiences and challenges in the pursuit of healing and growth.

What is your professional background/training?

Psychotherapy is professional practice, not a degree. There are probably 4-7 different types of licensed medical and counseling professionals whose degrees make them eligible to pursue licensure with the state to provide therapy and thus - there are many different routes to becoming a therapist. Francis is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), which means he received a Masters in Social Work focusing on mental health counseling. For therapists of all kinds, however, it is largely the clinical training that defines their specialities more than the degree. Francis has experience working with children, toddlers, college students and adults. He has been trained in: Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Gottman Institute Couples Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), and other modalities. He holds a certification in Personalized psychodynamic therapy (CMT) and is a member of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group. Beyond this, Francis is also an expert in Parent-Child Play Therapy (PC-CARE) and is an authorized trainer who can provide certifications in this modality. Beyond this - Francis has worked in a number of non-clinical human services settings and has an expertise in working with high-performing adults via his experiences as a peer counselor at Harvard and his extensive experiences as a college counselor broadly.
